Hiking Plum Island

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

Something weird is happening. Maddox is making us into “outdoor people.” Today we drove out to Plum Island to walk along the Hellcat trail, which went through a series of dune and then marsh. If you had told us, oh, four years ago that we would have voluntarily done this, I would have called you crazy. In fact, there are pictures of me (and my sisters) sulkenly lying on the plankboard trail about ten years ago, when my family went here for a vacation.

Today though, we had a great time. It’s amazing to find such a vast amount of open space in the area.

Maddox loves trails, and always has — he is still endlessly entertained by the simple act of moving forward. A trail just seems to drive him on.

Plus, there were stairs on this trail. Can you imagine being of the age where stairs fill you with happiness and wonder?

I’m also still amazed at his energy. The trail wasn’t strenous at all, but he was halfway running the whole time. He did stop at one point, plop himself down, and request water and raisins.

He made it nearly two miles before he requested a piggyback!

Growing Up

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Back when Maddox was about three months old, I was talking with another dad who has two children, one four and one who is just a few months older than Mads. He said that babies’ development seems to come in spurts, usually every few months.

Well, we’ve certainly had one of those spurts recently – coincidentally enough, right around his first birthday. It’s getting harder and harder to refer to him as a baby because of how much he’s changing.

The biggest change has been walking. A month or so ago, Maddox took his first steps in (of all places) the bath tub. He took another few the next day, and then that was it. I think of him saying, alright, I know how to do this now, I just need to wait for my body to get the balance down.

Then near the end of last week he decided, ok, I think I’m good! And he started walking everywhere. He still stumbles and falls a lot of course, and he hasn’t learned how to stand up without the support of a couch, wall, etc, but I’m sure that is coming soon. It was really surreal last week when I was in the kitchen making breakfast, and all of the sudden I just see him turn the corner and walk into the kitchen. I’m so proud of him, but even better, he’s so proud of himself – you can just see it in his face when he walks towards you.

At the same time he’s also begun making new sounds, like “ga ga”. He’s said maybe about a dozen words since he first said “da da” six months ago, but recently it’s just been a constant stream of new sounds. He’s also started using emphasis as well. For example, when he finds a crayon he’ll beeline over to his drawing pad saying “dot dot, dot dot” (which is what Jeanne, his daycare provider, has taught him to call it) in what can best be described as an excited whisper. It’s pretty cute.

He’s started imitating more sounds too. The other night, Leanne and I were watching a cartoon where a hawk was swooping down and making a screeching cawing sound. Out of nowhere, Maddox does a dead-on impression of it.

He’s also growing in other ways, such as having stranger anxiety, which is odd to get used to since it was so non-existant until now.

Right after his birthday, we moved his crib into the bedroom that was eventually going to be his when he was old enough for a bed.

So, there’s been quite a lot of change for The Duke recently! The Duke has been Mad’s nickname ever since he started crawling. He reminded me of Marmaduke, the cartoon dog, because of the way he crawled around. Except I thought the dog’s name was Marduke. Which, of course, can be shortened to Duke. And hence Maddox became Duke, The Duke, or Baby Duke.

Walking the Baby to Sleep

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

I don’t know if all babies love motion (probably yes, as there are lots of rocking chairs in the world), but it is one of the best ways to calm Maddox down.

This morning, Mads and I slept late (7:30) so he didn’t want to go right down for his nap. I tried cuddling and bouncing and changing him just in case it was cold wet diapers keeping him awake. No dice. So, I put Maddox in his Baby Bjorn (I love the Bjorn) and we went for a 15 minute walk around our apartment complex. By the time we did the last loop, Maddox was fast asleep.

Transferring him to the Pack n Play went fine, and soon he was happily swaddled and listening to iTunes (Stanford Mixed Company a Capella group). Unfortunately, our cats decided that now was a great time to fight each other, so he’s up again. But it’s still amazing how taking a walk will help a sleepy fussy baby make that final transition to sleep.

Separation Anxiety

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

It took two weeks, but I’ve just about adjusted to spending the day away from Maddox. The mornings where he’s awake and alert always make it tougher to say goodbye, that’s for sure, but often once I get to work things get so busy that it’s suddenly 4:30 and I get to drive home and see him.

We’ve taken to calling Maddox our “monkey”, because of the uncanny resemblance he has to them when it comes to climbing. Put him against your chest and chances are he’ll start doing everything he can to climb up you.

So I paid special attention this morning when I was listening to a random mix of all my iPod songs in the car, and a song called Proudest Monkey came on, by the Dave Matthews Band. I hadn’t hear this song before (no big surprise there though – I haven’t actually heard probably about 30% of my music), but it had a catchy tune and I’ve been especially attuned to anything monkey related, having a monkey of my own now.

The first verse gave me a big smile:

Swing in this tree
Oh I am bounce around so well
Branch to branch,
limb to limb you see
All in a day’s dream
I’m stuck
Like the other monkeys here
I am a humble monkey

But the next gave me my first sneak preview of what it will be like to watch my son grow up, leave home, and begin his own life

But then came the day
I climbed out of these safe limbs
Ventured away
Walking tall, head high up and singing
I went to the city
Car horns, corners and the gritty
Now I am the proudest monkey you’ve ever seen

I’m getting worried about this … and he’s only four weeks old! It made me want to appreciate every moment we have with him now, when we can pick him up and hold him and hug him and he can’t do anything about it!

On an unrelated note, since it was so nice today we drove out to Bradley Palmer State Forest (the one nice thing about being so far removed from commercial districts is that we sure do have a lot of parks around here) and took a short hike. I just picked the closest trail and said “Let’s go explore!”, so of course we ended up at a gravel pit. But the trail itself was quite nice, and Mads sure does enjoy being strapped into his Baby Bjorn. We also had our first in-car changing … though I use the term “we” loosely, since Leanne did all the work.

What We Did Today

Exciting news – Dad has joined the blog =)

Today has been pretty great. Mads and I slept until 8, instead of getting up at 7. He spent the morning in the sling, so I had the chance to eat a bowl of cereal and answer some emails. Then Kate came over, and we took a short walk, which Maddox seemed to like. The motion must have been soothing, because he slept the whole time we were on the move.

Contrary to yesterday’s behavior, Maddox has been sleeping for 20 minute stretches in his Pack n Play. Possibly, all that activity helped Mads sleep more soundly. We still spent a lot of time cuddling, but having a break made it easier on my arm muscles, which are soon going to be formidable.

Around lunch time, Dave, a friend from work, Skyped in and Mads and I got a chance to say hi to the people at work. Then, we tried having a quick Skype call with Dad, but were interrupted by hunger after about 3 minutes.

This afternoon, we spent some time on the balcony in a rocking chair. I think Mads likes the change in how the air feels, because he calms right down when we go outside. It could also be the light – when he’s active, he likes to stare out the window.

Now, with about an hour and a half until Dad gets home, it’s just about hungry time again and then we’ll try for another cuddle on the couch. Although I’m a bit tired, it’s been great to have a more active day, and I’m excited to try winding down tonight by giving Maddox a bath before bed – one of the baby books I’ve been reading suggests starting this early, so it’s part of the baby’s routine as he gets older. We may not make it to a bath – you never know how the day is going to end up – but it’s fun to anticipate regardless.
