Nightmares

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Maddox has been having nightmares. He’s always been a pretty good sleeper (that is, once we realized that it’s ok if you put your child down and he cries for thirty seconds). But in the past few weeks he started waking up several times at night, and not doing the fake moan/cry he does, but actually crying. Even stranger, he would start crying when it was time to go to bed.

Last Friday we stopped at a roast beef place for dinner and we were playing an iPhone app while we waited. It was this one where animals popped out of boxes. He was enjoying it until we got to one with a lion, at which point he freaked out and it took several minutes to calm him down.

So we’ve spent the past week building up his confidence against lions. I tell him that I’ll protect him from all the lions, that the lions are silly, that they all went away, etc. That’s seemed to have helped, and he’s begun talking about how he isn’t afraid of them either. He’ll even say “Meh-meh KILL lion!”

Now where did he learn the word kill? I have no idea. I don’t think they do much killing in Blues Clues or Yo Gabba Gabba. But if it helps him with his nightmares, more power to him!

This is a new one: Maddox having his toys interact with each other! Just another sign of him growing more and more into a little boy.

The Emotions of a Two Year Old

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

It can’t be easy being two. You have all of these emotions, but no experience or understanding of how to handle them. Maddox definitely went through a phase where he found the best way to express those emotions was physically, by repeatedly hitting us.

Thankfully, that phase is past, and the current one is more entertaining than anything else.

Influencial Toddlers

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Maddox has been interacting more and more with other children recently. Whereas before, when he was younger, they would mostly just do this kind of creepy stare, now they actually do something resembling social interaction. Even if that interaction involves teaching bad habits.

For example, Maddox met another boy named Sascha at the playground a few weeks ago. One of Sascha’s favorite activities was running around with a stick in his mouth. Well Maddox found this absolutely fascinating, so he decided to do the same thing.

In turn, Maddox decided to show Sascha how awesome it was to splash in muddy puddles and get as much of your shoes, socks, and clothes as soaked as possible.

And all of this occurred in just about ten minutes. I can’t wait to see what he picks up once he starts pre-school.

Trip to the Beach

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Lately, Maddox has wanted to be outside as much as possible.  When he and Dad come home at the end of the day, he makes a beeline for the sliding door that leads out to the deck.  Then, he tries to open the door, all the while asking if we can go, “Outside?  Outside?  Outside PLEASE?”

With this in mind, Jon, Maddox and I have been spending more time at the beach.  Mads isn’t a big fan of the water (yucky water!) but he likes to chase the birds and play in the sand. He’s also really into sticks.  Jon and I were listening to This American Life today, and the interviewee was explaining how his Dad used to hand him and his brother buckets and make them pick up rocks off the lawn.  And I was thinking, you know, for a two year old, that is prime entertainment.  Also, it’s a hereditary thing, because apparently, when I was in pre-school, I used to make all the other little girls in my class pick up sticks and drop them down the gutter.  (I was the princess in this scenario and I guess the sticks were fueling my evil empire or something.)

Mads and I like to walk up and down the beach, find a spot, plop down and put sand in a bucket.  Then, Mom dumps the bucket and we repeat.  Jon and I are starting to learn that there’s nothing more relaxing than just hanging out on the beach with your kid.
