Mobility!

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

A few weeks ago, we noticed something interesting when we put Maddox on the floor to play with his toys. A few minutes later, he would magically appear in another spot. Eventually it clicked: He was actually moving himself. The methods were somewhat varied, but they included the backwards-sitting-scoot and something similar to what they do in army movies to go under barbed wire. He came close to a crawl a few times, and would make two or three quick movements before falling flat on his face.

Then just a day or two ago, we had actual, legitimate, sustained crawling! Including a 90 degree turn – very impressive.

At the same time, Maddox also learned how to stand in his crib. It definitely takes some getting used to, to come into the nursery and see your baby standing and looking up at you.

Leanne has done a great job babyproofing the house, although I’m still getting used to the fact that you can turn around and – whoops – baby is pulling down your laptop.

Two Months Old

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

I’m at home alone today with Maddox for, believe it or not, the first time since he was born – which just happens to be two months ago today.

It’s pretty amazing to compare where he is now to where he was a month ago (let alone two!). He’s interacting so much more, both with us, the world around him, and he even has begun to notice the cats. We’ve rediscovered his fondness for resembling a famous Mexican dish, the Baby Burrito

(Even when sleeping, he smiles as soon as you wrap the blanket around him – it’s really cool). He’s vocalizing a lot more as well, in the happy, baby sounds way. Even his cry is sounding “older.” We’re also able to start interacting with him on a more person-to-person level, like “reading” Goodnight Moon

He gets to see my family in just three weeks when we all take a trip up to Acadia National Park in Maine, and I’m sure they will be amazed as well to see how much he’s grown since they first saw him.

Below is a picture of one of his newest activities:

That would be staring at a piece of art we have on our wall called Happy Flight. The piece stars the luck dragon Falkor from the moving Neverending Story, and every morning he spends at least a half hour marveling at it. More and more he’s been laughing and smiling at it as well. I wasn’t sure why until I looked at the picture again

and realized: of course he loves it, it’s a picture of a big happy smiling face!

Music has charms to soothe the savage beast

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Overall, Maddox is a good baby. He’s a charmer in the morning, a wild man in the evening, and your standard crying newborn at night. However he does have his, shall we say, moments, when nothing you do will seem to calm him down. One option I found was to put him in his “organic baby safari” outfit and sprint around the apartment, pretending to hunt animals on the African plains (yes, I know he’s far too young to really understand what we’re doing, but at least it keeps me entertained!).

Unfortunately, after being gone from the house for 10 hours, I don’t always have the energy to dash around the house. It wasn’t until yesterday that both Leanne and I realized an excellent alternative: Music and singing.

We have done in the past of course, but it wasn’t until yesterday that I realized how suddenly and powerfully it affects Mads. He can be in any state of crying – be it small whimpers or screaming bloody murder, and usually after just a few notes from a song he’ll stop crying. The song itself doesn’t seem to matter in the slightest either. I’ve sung everything from Weezer to Ben Folds to Grateful Dead and he’s happy with everything.

I know it might not mean much this early in his life, and if anything I’m happy to know of a way to make him instantly happy, but I hope this is early signs of a love for music.

And by the way, since I know at least one English major reads this blog: I do realize I’m using the wrong “version” of this oft-quoted phrase for the subject, but it was just too good to pass up. Not to mention the original version of the quote, involving “soothing” and “breast”, is apropos to the topic anyway!

Maddox and the Instant Baby Quiet Machine (Brookstone Tranquil Moments)

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

tranquil-momentsIn addition to a swing (and a pile of other baby-related items), Auntie Kristy gave us a Instant Baby Quiet Machine, otherwise known as Brookstone’s Tranquil Moments Sounds for Baby.

We’ve tried the white noise and the prenatal sounds, which are kind of strange. Last night, we got all crazy and put it on the dolphins setting. I wasn’t sure what this would sound like – I guess I was kind of imagining humpback whale sounds. You know, like these.

But, it was surprisingly pleasant. Lots of splashing and gurgling, although no whale sounds, sadly. Maddox seems to like the noises, and they sure put Jon and me to sleep pretty quickly.

The only one I can’t use is the driving setting, because the random acceleration stresses Jon out (he’s been driving in Salem too much) and because it makes me get that hot-tired-groggy feeling that you get when you fall asleep in the backseat of a car for too long.

All in all, I’d vote yes for this product, and thanks for getting it for us, Auntie Kristy!
