Phrases of the Week

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Maddox has been using new words and phrases non-stop for the past few weeks. Here are a few of the most popular recent ones:

Three more minutes

Instead of just saying no to things now, Maddox tells us “Three more minutes!” He’ll say that to pretty much anything: getting changed, going to the car, eating dinner. Of course, he really has no concept of a minute, but he’s figured out that if he responds this way he’ll usually get to continue what he’s doing longer than if he just says no. Smart kid.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack

Leanne mentioned this earlier, but whenever we get in the car now, it’s pretty much “Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!” the whole way now. This is, of course, in reference to the truck named Mack in Cars. It doesn’t even matter if we’re seeing trucks or not on the road, though that usually does lead to a few extra “Maaaaaaaaaaaaack!” exclamations.

Wow, Pretty!

A lot of things are pretty now, including music, the outdoors, and even his dad every now and then. But what I really get a kick out of is the way he says “Wow”, with such wonder and astonishment, as if this is really the prettiest thing on earth.

Catching Up

Maddox has been near 100% healthy for the past few days, for the first time since February 3rd, and he seems absolutely, positively thrilled with it. I don’t know if I have ever seen him so happy for such a long period of time. I was actually tempted to take the day off just to hang out with him because he was in such a wonderful mood.

It really seems as though he’s trying to make up for being sick for a month by squeezing all this good mood into every day. Also, he seems to be catching up on new growth developments as well. For the past couple weeks he’s been more and more talkative. He was never much of a verbalizer – he said dada and mama at the average age, and started slowly adding other words, but it’s only recently that he’s begun talking in full sentences. Of course, 90% of the words aren’t real, but it’s still amazing to hear his little voice go on and on about … who knows what!

Day Out with Dad

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

I recently had a chance to head out with Maddox for a few hours, during a rare moment when neither of us was feeling sick. I thought I would give his mom a chance to rest, and there’s something fun about just me and him going out. It feels like an adventure, even if it’s just to a furniture store.

Furniture stores are actually a blast for Mads right now, as they’re these massive places to run around and there’s not much that can get him into trouble, besides sharp glass coffee tables. He discovered one of the power recliners, which kept him entertained for at least ten minutes. Of course, trying to actually shop for furniture during his excitement wasn’t the easiest task, but it was a nice break for both of us to get out of the house.

It was around lunch time then, so I thought I would try taking Maddox out to lunch, just us, for the first time. There was a Chipotle, which I thought would be something different for him to try. He was pretty adorable once we got in there. He put his bottle on a table, started pushing a high chair over, and started grabbing napkins.

So we had a nice lunch together, and good conversation – Maddox is extremely talkative recently, and while I can only understand about 1/3rd of the words, it’s still fascinating to hear him verbalize so much.

Uh oh!

Usually the last sight we see before he disappears into a room

We confirmed a month or so again that Maddox’s first word was definitely “dada.” My pride of being the first object to be bestowed a name in Maddox’s world was quickly dashed though when I found out that noise is one of the easiest for a baby to make. Still, the fact that he associates it with me was pretty cool!

Of course, he tended to make the same sound in almost every other situation, including calling our cat Sam dada. The worst though is when he’s stuck in his car seat longer than usual and he starts kind of yelling it. It’s not my fault buddy!

My favorite is when he says it in a really stern voice – da DA! – like I’m doing something wrong.

Anyway, since then, Maddox has been making lots of sounds, but none of them in the required three-times-in-a-row format for them to really be considered a word he knows how to use. Until this weekend, when we can now pretty safely say he knows the word “uh oh”.

Now of course the point is that he has to use that in context, as in, “Uh oh! I’m about to do something I really shouldn’t!” But he says it almost every time he crawls.

… and almost every time he crawls, he gets into something he shouldn’t be. So I think the fact that he repeatedly announces “Uh oh! Uh oh! Uh oh!” as he skitters around on his hands and knees makes me think he’s grasped the basics of the word.
