Maddox spent the early part of last week recovering from a cough and cold he’d had for about two weeks. It was great to see him feeling better, and exciting to have the first weekend in three weeks were we all would be feeling good. On Thursday, his nose starting running a bit more though, and on Friday he had a bit of a cough. It didn’t seem to bad though, so we didn’t think too much of it.
Friday night, around 11:30, he woke up crying. Which is pretty unusual, he often sleeps straight through until morning. We didn’t think much of it until he woke up again at 12:30, and started waking up pretty much every 45 minutes after that. As the morning approached we noticed his breathing was different, a sort of rasping pulling for air. Around 10:00 we went to give him a bath, which is when we noticed every time he breathed in his skin was pulling taut against his ribs, he was breathing very rapidly, and really just seemed to have trouble getting oxygen.
So we put him in the car and drove to his doctor’s office. We were there for over an hour while we waited for them to try various remedies, including an oral steroid and a baby version of an inhaler. Unfortunately, while the treatments helped they didn’t help enough, and we were admitted to the hospital. It wasn’t until I walked into the room and they gave me the TV channel guide and three days worth of meal planning that I realized this was pretty serious!
In the end, Maddox was discharged about 24 hours later with their best guess being asthma complications arising from a cold. We’re going to keep him home for a bit while we continue to give him the inhaler and make sure his breathing gets better.
