deCordova and Drumlin

Monday, April 11th, 2011

This weekend was the first true Spring weekend of 2011, so we thought we’d take advantage of that by driving an hour south to the Lexington area and visit the deCordova Sculpture Garden and Drumlin Farm.

We were very excited to go outside with Maddox. Winter was very, very long. It’s actually the first time Winter has ever felt long to me, and I think it’s because there was an 18 month old running around in circles. Also, last year Maddox was walking, but just barely. He didn’t understand the concept of, well, anything besides tumbling forward and hoping his feet held him up.

Once we got to the museum, we setup a picnic in front of a metal sculpture of a gigantic dog. Mads was pretty good staying close by, even though he was clearly thrilled to be outside. Leanne would ocassionaly tempt him with berries and hotdogs (his two favorite foods right now, by far) and he’d come running back to us.

I can’t say he was very interested in the art though. What he did find fascinating was the pinecones! He went on a search for them, and would come running back to us whenever he found one, very excited to share in his discovery. He ended up collecting them in a neat line, making a little sculpture of his own.

After spending some more time collecting branches, leaves, and pinecones, we drove over to the Drumlin animal farm. By far Mad’s favorite animal here was the chickens, who he found hilarious.

He wasn’t very into any of the other animals though, possibly because of a close encounter we had with a very loud sheep. Who knew a baaaaaaa could be so menacing? So we hightailed it out of there.

Freedom

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

This weekend, Maddox, Leanne and I were all finally feeling better for the first time since late January. We celebrated by doing something simple: getting out of the house. First stop was for his third haircut (toddler hair doesn’t grow nearly as quickly as I assumed it would). Overall, he was pretty well behaved. We go to Snip-Its because it’s convenient and to be honest I really don’t care how his hair looks, as long as it’s shorter!

Third haircut

Another stop we made was to the furniture store. Maddox absolutely loves these places, especially the kids room. I think it’s mostly the huge, endless space that he loves. But climbing around on chairs shaped as giant hands, or sitting contently on a princess throne, makes him very happy.

It was also in the 50′s, so I thought I’d take Maddox up to his favorite playground. Unfortunately, it was still quite snow covered, and nearly impossible to move around on. I was glad to see that Mads wasn’t as bothered by walking on snow as he used to be though. We took a walk down one of the nearby paths instead, and on our way stumbled upon a puddle. Maddox absolutely loves water, but hadn’t even really “experienced” a puddle before.

He definitely experienced this puddle to the fullest extent possible though. I was very glad he was at least wearing his waterproof boots, but by the time he was finished his stocks and pants were pretty thoroughly soaked. It was one of those things he was enjoying so much though, that I wondered how long he would have gone for if I hadn’t had to drag him away from it.

Sledding? Not so much

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

Today, Leanne is in Boston for most of the day getting her hair cut (meanwhile, I got mine cut in twenty minutes this morning. Must be a girl thing). So I thought while mommy was awhile I would take Mads out and for a little risk and adventure and go sledding! I figured with Mom away there’d be no one telling us to be careful or slow down.

Apparently Maddox isn't a huge fan of sledding

Except, it turns out, for Maddox. He’s not really a huge fan of the snow to begin with. For one, he seems to be convinced it completely immobilizes him, because he never even attempts to walk on it. Also, he’s never shown much love for “thrill” activities like swinging. He’d rather methodically move one pile of woodchips onto another.

So I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that he absolutely hated going out into 20″ snow and trying to sled. First, he fell asleep on the way there. We arrived, at which points I realized that while I remembered all the boots, hats, mittens, coats, and other accouterments, I had forgotten the actual sled. So we drove home, got the sled, drove back, paid $2 for parking with a $20 and received 18 dollar coins, and made our way to the small sledding hill at Maudsley State Park. Maddox didn’t want to walk, or be dragged in the sled, so this was all carrying him in one arm and the sled in the other in two feet of packed snow.

But it was all worth it, right? Right!?

Perhaps not.

Little Advancements

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The last big milestone we hit with Mads was back in May when he turned one and, shortly after, started walking. And I suppose our next big milestone will be when he really starts talking (though he’s using more and more new words recently).

In the meantime, we’re still experiencing lots of small new things that are just as exciting. Such as working on improving his dance moves

walking down steps (this one is always a little nerve wracking – he approaches the step very carefully and seems to think it through, and then just throws himself forward)

strolling down the sidewalk in Newburyport

and chasing (and barking) after monstrously large dogs at the playground

Interaction

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Maddox had quite a fun weekend, thanks to a visit from his (nearly) five year old cousin, Aoife, and Leanne’s sister Kristy. They can only make sporadic visits, but this was the first time she could really interact with Maddox as something besides a blog, so I’m sure that was a nice change for her.

It’s very interesting to see how Mads interacts with other children. He seems much more curious about them in general than adults, which I suppose makes sense. Of course he interacts every day with two 2 year old twins at daycare, but we never get to see that. He still kind of does his own thing, but if another child starts playing with something interesting he’ll run over and check it out.

One of the funniest moments of the weekend was when Maddox became absolutely enthralled by these huge tubs of ice filled with soda at a get-together we had on Saturday. He spent literally thirty minutes moving pieces of ice, one by one, from one bucket to another. Then he spent the next thirty minutes stirring them with a stick. By the end of it, three other children were all stirring the ice with sticks. Who knew a one year old could be such a little leader.

Earlier in the day we also discovered the wonderful Cashman Park, which is right on the water in Newburyport. It has three sections for each age group, has lots of shade for when it’s sunny, and is surrounded by huge fields. It’s also really nice to have Maddox be skilled enough at moving around that we can plop him down and off he goes. We still have to be very careful around steps though as about 15% of the time he isn’t aware of them, and another 15% of the time he figures he’ll just try walking right down them and see what happens.

It certainly is a learning experience though, as a parent, figuring out the dynamics of interacting with other parents and their children on the playground. Again, Mads mostly found his own thing to do (he’s really into moving woodchips around), but he did have one cute moment where another girl his age came up and hugged him. I don’t think he noticed though, he seemed very focused on the woodchips at the moment.
