Looking, touching, sitting, and INTENSE PAIN

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

DSC_3064It’s been an interesting couple weeks for Mads. First, he’s been learning how to sit on his own, which is a pretty cool thing to see. Previously, if you sat him on the floor and let him go, he’s just kind of … topple over, face-first into the blanket (which he would then proceed to eat).

But recently, he’s discovered those two limbs dangling off of his shoulders could be used to prevent this! So he’ll stick out an arm as he leans forward, look up at you, and grin. It sounds like such a simple thing, being able to sit, but considering up until now he always has to be put in some type of contraption (which usually involves bouncing), it’ll be a nice upgrade.

He’s also looking much more intensely at things recently, from people to objects. For example, we’ve been carrying him around for months now, but only in the past few weeks has he kind of pulled back a bit and stared at us. Along with this looking comes touching. In the case of people, it involves squeezing our cheeks and pulling our mouths open. He’s also not only grabbing objects but moving them around with a respectable amount of velocity, meaning I suddenly have to fear for objects being thrown at me. Exciting!

DSC_3127Lastly, his teething has gotten even more intense, and we think he’s working on five simultaneous teeth now. Not only does teething seem to last FOREVER, but there’s also only about four things you can do to help it, and most of those don’t work for us. What’s especially sad is seeing him trying to be his normal happy self while clawing at his ear to try to deal with the mouth pain. Poor guy.

To end on a happier note, I uploaded some photos my mom took of their visit last weekend.

Four Weeks Old

sarah2Mads and I went to the doctor’s this morning for his one month check up. He’s very good in the car, and Mom’s biceps are getting awesome from carrying Mads, his car seat, and his bag of baby stuff down 3 flights of stairs every time we leave the apartment.

I was curious to know how much Maddox would weigh – he’s a good eater, and I’ve been noticing that he keeps outgrowing his clothes. At his last weigh-in, he was 8 lbs 4 oz. Today, he came in at 10 lbs 14 oz and 21″ tall (a gain of 1″ in height). I was so proud of him, it was worth all the hour-long feedings and nighttime chow downs.

wesAfter his appointment, I fed Mads at the doctor’s office (second time he’s eaten out of the apartment). Our pediatrician confirmed that Mads can go into populated enclosed spaces (offices, stores, etc.), so I called my friend Sarah at work to screen for sick people in the office. Yes, paranoid, I know, but it never hurts to be safe.

After confirming everyone was relatively healthy, I brought Maddox into the office where he was held by about 10 different people, and passed around three or four times each – we were there for 4 hours. He ate again at the office, and I am still not over how fantastic it is to be able to take him out for more than 2 hours at a time.

cynthia1He was so good – he likes to be held, and only cried once, when Mom was a little late to feed him. It was also really nice to be able to talk with one of my coworkers who has recently had a baby (not the one pictured to the left, I didn’t get a photo of her). We compared notes, and are both just really happy to have new little guys (in her case, a little girl) in our lives.

Maddox is really chill with other people, so he napped most of the afternoon, and it was great to spend some time catching up with my coworkers. Also, a ridiculous amount of people at my office really, really like babies.

When we got home, I noticed how Mads is actually focusing on things with his eyes. Not just people, but on toys and shapes and the jingly bell things dangling from his car seat handle. He is growing up so fast!

On another note, since he’s 4 weeks old now, this week, we’re going to tackle pumping. Wish us luck!

Also, thanks to Dave for the pictures!

Separation Anxiety

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

It took two weeks, but I’ve just about adjusted to spending the day away from Maddox. The mornings where he’s awake and alert always make it tougher to say goodbye, that’s for sure, but often once I get to work things get so busy that it’s suddenly 4:30 and I get to drive home and see him.

We’ve taken to calling Maddox our “monkey”, because of the uncanny resemblance he has to them when it comes to climbing. Put him against your chest and chances are he’ll start doing everything he can to climb up you.

So I paid special attention this morning when I was listening to a random mix of all my iPod songs in the car, and a song called Proudest Monkey came on, by the Dave Matthews Band. I hadn’t hear this song before (no big surprise there though – I haven’t actually heard probably about 30% of my music), but it had a catchy tune and I’ve been especially attuned to anything monkey related, having a monkey of my own now.

The first verse gave me a big smile:

Swing in this tree
Oh I am bounce around so well
Branch to branch,
limb to limb you see
All in a day’s dream
I’m stuck
Like the other monkeys here
I am a humble monkey

But the next gave me my first sneak preview of what it will be like to watch my son grow up, leave home, and begin his own life

But then came the day
I climbed out of these safe limbs
Ventured away
Walking tall, head high up and singing
I went to the city
Car horns, corners and the gritty
Now I am the proudest monkey you’ve ever seen

I’m getting worried about this … and he’s only four weeks old! It made me want to appreciate every moment we have with him now, when we can pick him up and hold him and hug him and he can’t do anything about it!

On an unrelated note, since it was so nice today we drove out to Bradley Palmer State Forest (the one nice thing about being so far removed from commercial districts is that we sure do have a lot of parks around here) and took a short hike. I just picked the closest trail and said “Let’s go explore!”, so of course we ended up at a gravel pit. But the trail itself was quite nice, and Mads sure does enjoy being strapped into his Baby Bjorn. We also had our first in-car changing … though I use the term “we” loosely, since Leanne did all the work.

(Looking at) The Great Outdoors

Maddox has a new favorite past time. It involves staring out the window and flailing around in enthusiasm.

I’m not sure how well he can see, but he definitely focuses on the light, and he reacts when birds fly by – our apartment complex has a ridiculous number of birds on the roof.

I support this new hobby, because last night he decided that, in addition to his usual feeding times, being up for 2 hours straight would be very fun. (Mom & Dad are kind of tired and are glad it’s Friday.) So, this morning I’m keeping an eye on him while he entertains himself.

Tomorrow, I’m going to move his crib over in front of the windows in the nursery (and nail up the cord to the blinds for safety) with hopes that he’ll be amused in his crib, too. Wish us luck on that one. =P

On another note, Mads and I had our first driving adventure when we went to go visit Dad at work yesterday. It was so great to be out of the apartment. I ended up feeding Mads there (thank you for the use of your conference room, Jon’s work!) and by feeding him while out, it extended the time we could stay out from 2 hours to 4. Imagine confining all of your activities to under 2 hours and you’ll realize how great that is.

The drive was a little nerve-wracking, since you can’t see how he’s doing because he’s in a rear-facing car seat. Luckily, Jon’s co-worker Sue told us about car seat mirrors to put on the back seat, so we’ll get one of those this weekend and it will be a little easier to take Mads places in the car. That is, provided I am awake enough to drive anywhere. =)
