Walking the Baby to Sleep

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

I don’t know if all babies love motion (probably yes, as there are lots of rocking chairs in the world), but it is one of the best ways to calm Maddox down.

This morning, Mads and I slept late (7:30) so he didn’t want to go right down for his nap. I tried cuddling and bouncing and changing him just in case it was cold wet diapers keeping him awake. No dice. So, I put Maddox in his Baby Bjorn (I love the Bjorn) and we went for a 15 minute walk around our apartment complex. By the time we did the last loop, Maddox was fast asleep.

Transferring him to the Pack n Play went fine, and soon he was happily swaddled and listening to iTunes (Stanford Mixed Company a Capella group). Unfortunately, our cats decided that now was a great time to fight each other, so he’s up again. But it’s still amazing how taking a walk will help a sleepy fussy baby make that final transition to sleep.

The End of the Bear Parade

Poor Mads. His Pack ‘n Play mobile just bit the dust.

For the past week, the music box inside the mobile has been losing notes and playing in the wrong key. This morning, in an attempt to salvage the mobile, I took out the metal keys in the music box. His bears still move, but they don’t sing. Instead, I play iTunes and hope he doesn’t mind. We’re testing it out as I type this.

I have to admit, if this works, it will be a relief. We’ve been listening to a constant stream of Rock A Bye Baby, which is not really a musical masterpiece even when it’s on key. Also, the lyrics are terrible.

nap

Cross your fingers – I just peeked, and it looks like replacing Rock A Bye Baby with Portishead is acceptable for nap time. Now I’m going to eat breakfast and try to catch some sleep. Last night, Mads slept for a record 5 hours, but unfortunately, I was up for half of that. And, this morning, Mads decided to get up to say goodbye to Dad, so he had playtime at 6:30 and ate breakfast at 7:00.

Uh, oh it looks like Better than Ezra is not going over as well as Portishead. Excuse me, I’m off to wind the silent (but hopefully still entertaining) Bear Parade!

More for the photo-junkies: Here’s Mads’ in his Papasan for the last time – I thought the dangling bunny might be interesting now that he can swat at it, but unfortunately, Mads prefers manually bouncing (i.e. Dad) and doesn’t actually fit in the Papasan anymore.

This Week So Far

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

On Sunday, we hung out with our Bear Parade mobile:

Monday was terrific – Mads took a 2 hour nap in the morning, swaddled in his Pack ‘n Play. In the afternoon, we went to visit Dad at work. Mom and some ducks had a pb & j sandwich by a pond in a pretty cemetery by Jon’s work while Dad held Mads.

Monday night was a nightmare. Mads was up 4 or 5 times and silly me, I didn’t go to bed until 10. Usually, I try to catch a nap before bed which sounds like the height of folly out of context, but is really helpful when you know you’re going to be up half the night.

On Tuesday, Mads wouldn’t nap until 2pm. Needless to say, Tuesday is kind of a haze. Auntie Kate came up in the afternoon bearing coffee and 3 cute new outfits (Mads is kind of like the hulk, he keeps bursting out of his clothes).

Today, Mads has been pretty adorable:

After playtime, I tried the Trifecta: swaddling, pacifier and Norah Jones on iTunes. He’s also facing the windows so he can watch the light. The paci fell out awhile ago, but I’ve learned (oh have I learned) that if it falls out and he doesn’t mind, do NOT try to put it back in or you’re just asking for trauma.

swaddling

So far it’s working, but cross your fingers – a lot of times it’s a fake out.

My mom’s coming up later today to help out so Jon can go to a meeting for webmaster Dads tonight – cool idea organized by @prwood whose baby Esme has just learned how to roll over – we can’t wait until Mads learns this! =)
